This is a comparison of debt versus savings, as requested. Unfortunately I do not have data going back as far as I would like.

I am not at all certain I converted the monthly data for debt to quarterly correctly, so all the data may be offset a few months, but I don't think that really matters for our purposes.

Here is a credit market debt as a percent of GDP graph. (This was supposed to be your homework)
Not really the same thing, but interesting nonetheless.
And what can I say? I was never good about doing homework. In fact, I was awesomely good at not doing homework. And yet somehow I graduated. I think they just didn't want me for another year...
